The Dunphy family has a tradition on Leap Day. Every four years when Leap Day comes they all take the day off from school or work to try something new and exciting. This tradition has been in the family for years and years, and is very special to each of them. In the episode they decided to try out the trapeze; something none of them have ever done before.
Primary group - a small social group whose members share personal and lasting relationships.
The entire cast of Modern Family makes up a primary group. All of the characters are very close to one another, and they share lasting relationships. They are all family and care about the interests of each other. If one family member is going through a tough time, they all bond together to help one another. They would not be considered a secondary group because they are not impersonal with each other.
Triad - a social group with three members.
Cameron Tucker, his partner Mitchell, and their adopted daughter, Lily, make up a triad. They are a close knit social group that has three members. They are a part of other groups as well, but each of these three characters make up an immediate family. This immediate family is what forms the triad.
Instrumental leadership - group leadership that focuses on the completion of tasks.
Claire Dunphy uses instrumental leadership quite often. As a mother, she uses her leadership to guide her family. In on episode, she wants to get the house cleaned, and she demonstrates instrumental leadership by assigning each family member a task to help accomplish the ultimate goal (task): getting the house cleaned.

Cameron and Mitchell have a large group of friends that they do activities with. They always seem to be going to some sort of party with thier other gay friends.
Rationality- A way of thinking that emphasizes deliberate, matter-of-fact calculation of the most efficient way to accomplish a particular task.
Gloria is definitely a rational person. For every situation, she always seems to have the fastest and easiest solution. While her husband Jay likes to overthink everything.
Oligarchy - The rule of the many by the few
Claire Dunphy attempts to get a stop sign put in by her house on a few of the episodes. This is made impossible because of the Traffic Control Board which controls the city and the way the streets operate. Although the board has very few members, it has a major impact on many people.
Secondary group- A large and impersonal social group whose members pursue a specific goal or activity.
When a member of Dillon's band quits unexpectedly before a concert, they turn to Cameron to be a backup drummer. Cameron is only in the band for one night but he helped them pursue thier goal of playing in front of a live audience.
Claire uses her authority and leadership all throughout the show.
